Eradicating Ground Hogs from Horse and Livestock Pastures

If a cow or horse steps into a ground hog hole, it can break a leg. For this reason, people who keep horses and cattle have a strong interest in ground hog eradication. Complete eradication is not possible, because new ground hogs will move in; but if one is dealing with a large area, it’s reasonably easy to keep the ground hog population down.

One can of course trap ground hogs, especially in areas surrounding pastures, in live traps baited with cut up apples or cantaloupe melon. But an easier method in the pasture itself is to gas their burrows, after first creating enough commotion to send most ground hogs home, thereby ensuring that they are in their burrows. After gassing each burrow, fill it in, mark it with a stake visible at a distance, and revisit the site in a few days to make sure the burrow hasn’t been dug out and reoccupied.

Vegetable Gardens and Ground Hogs

Ground hogs, referred to as woodchucks in much of the country, are the vegetable gardener’s nemesis. One can of course gas, trap, or shoot them; but by then a good deal of damage has been done, and more may happen before the offending varmint or varmints are dispatched.

Here the best answer is Mr. McGregor’s Fence®. This economical and efficient device puts a low barrier fence just behind two pet-safe, child-safe charged wires–ensuring that any ground hog or other small animal seeking to go over or under the barrier will come into good contact with the charged wires, get zapped, and go home. Since animals are frightened by electricity much more than by repellants, this answer is 100% effective all of the time–and it works not only against ground hogs but also against squirrels, rabbits, skunks, opossums, and virtually all small animals. McGregor vegetable garden fence kits and components are sold at this site (see the catalog’s electric fence section). Flower Gardens and Ground Hogs

People don’t normally want to put fences, even low ones, around flower gardens, so in such cases Mr. McGregor’s Fence® is not an option. However, in addition to the traditional trapping and bombing options, one can also spray the growing plants with Ro-pel®, a repellent that gives them an extremely bitter taste and strongly discourages ground hogs. This spraying must be repeated every few weeks, because the plants grow fast, and new shoots will taste just fine. However, aside from the need for repeated treatments, this is a good answer.
